Democratization of Science
A central objective of Compendium Pleurothallidinarum is to promote a more accessible approach to scientific inquiry. While peer-review is often treated as synonymous with scientific validity, alternative interpretations often receive little substantive examination when they originate outside the prevailing methodological framework or outside traditional academic channels.
Scientific participation should not be limited to formal academic institutions. Researchers, citizen scientists, horticulturists, field naturalists, photographers, growers, and independent scholars all contribute observations, expertise, and perspectives that expand the collective understanding of biodiversity.
The value of a scientific contribution is ultimately determined not by the credentials of its author, but by the quality of its evidence and its ability to withstand scrutiny.
Throughout the tropics, habitat destruction, environmental change, and species extinction continue to outpace scientific documentation. Many species may disappear before they are adequately studied, photographed, sequenced, or even recognized.
While modern technologies have expanded scientific participation beyond traditional academic institutions and created unprecedented opportunities for collaboration, it can still take decades for a new species of plant to be formally named in a scientific publication through peer-review. For this reason, the publication emphasizes the rapid communication of evidence.
Science is ultimately self-correcting through observation, replication, the continued accumulation of evidence, and most importantly, through open scrutiny.
Compendium Pleurothallidinarum publishes open-access, interpretive models when they are sufficiently developed so they can be openly evaluated by others, criticized, tested, refined, or incorporated into current research rather than withheld indefinitely pending successive rounds of review.
Observations are illustrated with diagnostic photography intended to allow readers to independently evaluate the evidence presented.
The resulting work is organized in a natural history narrative format designed to remain accessible to specialists, growers, field biologists, citizen scientists, and readers outside formal academic settings.
Although the research is presented in its final form, Compendium Pleurothallidinarum welcomes informed criticism from researchers, citizen scientists, growers, field biologists, naturalists, photographers, and independent scholars regarding alternative interpretations and the reexamination of previously published conclusions.
